I just wanted to write a really quick blog post for Yankees catcher, Jose Trevino. I don’t like getting emotional about anything. But in his post-game interview, Trevino gave me chills with what he said!
Jose Trevino came to the Yankees on April 2 when the Rangers traded him for Albert Abreu and Robert Ahlstrom. Since then, and as of recent, he has been a fabulous addition.
I could state all of his stats, but I really want to talk about what he did for the team tonight on May 24.
The Yankees played the Orioles at home at Yankee Stadium and went into extra innings. In the 11th inning, Trevino went up to bat and hit a RBI single, giving the Yankees yet another walk off win!
Watch it here:
Not to mention, Trevino already hit a homerun earlier in the game and finished the night with three hits and three runs batted in. Wonderful offensive performance form him tonight.
When Trevino spoke to Ryan Ruoco after the game, he was teary eyed for a few reasons. One being the tragic shooting in Texas today which took place about an hour and a half away from where Trevino is from.
The other reason? The sentimental value his hit had regarding his father.
Trevino’s dad, Joe “Boogie” Trevino passed away in 2013 and never forced his son into baseball. When Trevino made it clear that he wanted to pursue the sport, his father was always there.
His father would pitch tennis balls to him in their backyard which they used to pretend was Yankee Stadium. In his post-game interviews, the catcher spoke about the scenarios his father would give him saying, “Ninth inning, down one. You need a base hit here to tie the game or win the game here at Yankee Stadium.” Boogie, a huge Yankee fan, always told his son that he was preparing him to be a Yankee!
In recent years, Trevino has experienced coincidences that seem to have been caused by someone from up above. On Father’s Day in 2018, around the time Jose was called up, he hit his first ever major league walk off hit. On that day, Isiah Kiner-Falefa scored the winning run. Tonight’s walk off hit happened on his father’s birthday and Kiner-Falefa once again scored the winning run. After he rounded first base, we saw Jose point to the sky with both hands and yell “Papí! Papí” with a humungous smile.
Trevino also mentioned that he had a great cup of coffee this morning which he drank out of one of his father’s favorite mugs! Great dads mean the world to those who get to have them and they obviously never stop looking out for us even if they’ve become angels.
Jose, thank you for reminding us tonight that there’s much more to baseball than stats and analytics. And thanks for that gorgeous base hit!!
Check out the tweet that Jose sent out of the video of his hit right here: https://twitter.com/HipHipJose5/status/1529312356773281792
I, along with so many other people am praying for everyone involved with today’s shooting. Congratulations, Jose on your beautiful walk off hit and happy heavenly birthday to your dad!
