Welcome to Part Three of “End of the Road” all about NFL players who might be retiring this season!
JOSH MCCOWN
Position: Quarterback
Team: Philadelphia Eagles
Age: 40 years old
Contract: One year contract is up.
Thoughts:
Josh McCown is an amazing football player. He is 40 years old and has played through 18 seasons for 11 teams. He was actually supposed to retire last year, so. much so, he had a spot set up on ESPN to be an analyst. If he was that far into retirement plans last year, then I’d say this was his last season. He tried for a ring one more time (playing with a torn hamstring) but it wasn’t meant to be. His emotional press conference emphasized how badly he wanted this and sort of hinted at him getting much closer to retirement. He tried and has 18 seasons under his belt and a career that he should be very proud of.
Teams McCown has played for:
- Arizona Cardinals (’02-’05)
- Detroit Lions (’06)
- Oakland Raiders (’07)
- Miami Dolphins (’08 Practice Squad)
- Carolina Panthers (’08-’09)
- Hartford Colonials (’10)
- San Francisco 49ers (’11-’13)
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers (’14)
- Cleveland Browns (’15-’16)
- New York Jets (’17-’18)
- Philadelphia Eagles (’19-Present)
FRANK FORE
Position: Running Back
Team: Buffalo Bills
Age: 36 years old
Contract: One year contract is up and became an unrestricted free agent
Thoughts:
This is Gore’s 15th season and he has become a significant asset to the Bills offense. This is a player who passed Barry Sanders’ to become the third-leading rusher of all time. Personally, I see him coming back. He is an unrestricted free agent now and I can see the Bills not going to great lengths to keep him. He has already played for multiple teams and if he’s given a good offer, I think he’ll take it.
BEN WATSON
Position: Tight End
Team: New England Patriots
Age: 39 years old
Contract: One year contract is up
Thoughts:
Ben Watson is a gem in the NFL. He has played wonderfully throughout 15 seasons. Watson has experienced quite a few injuries and ended up getting diagnosed with appendicitis last offseason and thought that it was a sign that he should retire. It seemed to be his last straw until he realized he missed the game too much and still had fuel left in his tank.
He is going to retire. His reasoning might be because his body is done and has played to it’s end point. I think it’s perfect timing due to the fact that his family just got larger. Watson and his wife just welcomed twins and they now have seven kids! This is so fabulous and knowing the type of family man that Watson is, I think now is the perfect time to retire and spend more time at home and delve into his other passions.
